Obituary for George Leroy Dunham

George Leroy Dunham, age 83, a Lapeer resident until 1993, moving to Harrison, MI and then recently moving back to Lapeer, passed away after a brief time in Hospice, on May 7, 2018. He was born in 1934 on the family farm, the sixth child and only son of Leroy (Roy) Dunham and Elizabeth A. Fitch. After graduating from Lapeer High School, class of 1952, he joined the Army, serving with the 3rd Infantry Division. While still in the Army he married the love of his life, Nancy L. Walker, in May 1956. They were happily married over 60 years. He hired in to General Motors in 1965 and became a Pipefitter in the Foundry at Pontiac Motors, retiring in 1993.
George was a member of the UAW, American Legion Post 404 Honor Guard, Clare County Historical Society, Harrison Area Genealogical Society, Twenty Lakes Antique Engine and Tractor Association Inc., Lapeer County Historical Society and Lapeer County Genealogical Society. He was able to complete his paternal Dunham family line back to 1629-30 in Plymouth, MA. He was very proud to be a member of the Honor Guard. He enjoyed puttering around with woodworking and tinkering with his McCormick Farmall Series H Tractor and driving it to the Clare County Museum for Old Fashion Day each fall. George had a lifelong love affair with music, Bluegrass/Country being his favorite, whether he was listening, singing or playing his guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle or harmonica. He enjoyed playing music with his buddies, especially his long time friend Merlin “Windy” Featheringill. His song repertoire was varied and extensive, he knew the funniest little dittys, and he recently sang a “Sentimental Journey” duet from memory with his granddaughter. If he memorized something he could recite it his entire life, such as the FFA creed from high school. He was quite the storyteller and was tickled to recently be interviewed by Joyce Bonesteel for her County Press column. Other pastimes he enjoyed were bowling, gardening (always a farmer at heart), hunting, and fishing, and he also played baseball when he was a young man. One of his favorite things to do was the annual fishing trip up to Canada with his wife Nancy and other family members, or going to the family cabin on Canada Creek Ranch and hunting. Above all he was a dearly loved family man, and simply put, we know we had a treasure. Family reunions will not be the same without him.
George is survived by his children Linda (Victor) White, Brenda Dunham, David (Debbie) Dunham and Andrea (Mike) Earley, Grandchildren Elizabeth (Cory) Goulet, Rachel (Matt) Prashaw, Joseph Dunham, Jacilyn Dunham, Christopher (Kayla) Dunham, Tyson (Jon) Foerster, Tara (Josh) Scripko, James (Sarah) Keovongsak, Jenny (Travis) Fick, Jeana Keovongsak, Grant (Tori) Earley, Lauren Earley, and great-grandchildren, Jenna Prashaw, Finlee Scripko, Noah Dunham, Green-Eva Patton Scott, Aricyn Fick, Tovi Fick and Rollo Fick. He is also survived by many friends and family, including his sister Helen Olds and his in-laws Bob Jacobs, Dianne Klein, Charles (Laurie) Walker, Willis (Marian) Walker, and many nieces and nephews. He was everyone’s favorite uncle.
He was preceded in death by his parents Liz & Roy Dunham, his wife Nancy, his sisters Betty Jacobs, Marion Kalesavich, Martha DeView, infant sister Joan Grace Dunham.
A Memorial Service is planned for 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Capstick Chapel in Downtown, Lapeer. The family has asked to fulfill his wish for donations to go to Clare County Historical Society 7050 S. Eberhart Ave, Clare, MI 48617 or Lapeer VFW Post 4139 128 Daley Rd., Lapeer, MI 48446.
