Obituary for Robert John Baird

Robert John Baird passed away on October 7, 2010. He was born October 29, 1925 and was the son of Herbert and Maud Baird. Robert was a lifelong resident of Lapeer and is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Elva Avis Baird; son Fred Baird of Austin, TX; grandsons, Robert (Jeanne) Baird of Austin, TX, Brittin Baird of Baton Rouge, LA; sisters-in-law, Eva Avis of Lapeer, Ruth Ann (Pete) Kavanagh of Emmet, Alice Doe of Traverse City, MI; also many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by sisters, Ora O’Conner and Margaret Kuhn; brothers-in-law Ronald Avis and Nelson Doe.

Robert was trained as an electrician in the Navy. He earned degrees from Wayne State in Mortuary Science and a MA in Mathematics, BA from University of Michigan at Flint in Math and Physics and worked toward his PhD at University of California at Santa Barbara in Mathematics. Robert joined his father as a partner in Baird’s Funeral Home after leaving the Navy. After 15 years in funeral service he changed careers and taught for the Flint School system, Baker Business College, Mott Community College, U of M at Flint and Adrian Business College for 5 years.

Robert was an avid sportsman and a founding member of the Lapeer County Sportsman’s Club. He and his wife both shot competitively for years and he was a gifted amateur gunsmith. Robert’s true love was hunting which he pursued from Alaska to Africa.

Robert was also a member of numerous fraternal orders including the Masons and the Odd Fellows of which he was the state Grand Master. He was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer for over 65 years having served on their Vestry for a number of years and was a past president.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date and will take place at Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer. Arrangements entrusted to Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors Capstick Chapel, 542 Liberty Park, Lapeer, MI 48446.
