Obituary for Rita L. Smith

Rita L. Smith, 87, of Lapeer, died April 16, 2013, at Lapeer County Medical Care Facility. She was born August 2, 1925 in North Branch, daughter of Pearl (O’Connell) and Sylvester Houck. She married the love of her life, Kenneth W. Smith in 1944 and he preceded her in death in 1981. Rita was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lapeer and had worked for 8 years at the Lapeer State Home. It was during that time that she displayed one of her talents by painting water color murals on the walls for the residents. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a person who was a kind and loving caregiver to her husband, a wonderful mother, and a great friend. Rita also enjoyed bringing music and fun into her home for her family and friends. She was a very talented musician, playing with several bands including “The Sugar Shack” and “Old Time Country Sound”. She was also a seamstress perfectionist for the public until she was 80 years old. Rita was loved by everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her children, John (JoLynn) Smith of Lapeer, Patricia (Michael) Fromwiller of Lapeer; grandchildren Michael (Jamie) Fromwiller, Chan (Laura) Fromwiller, Kristine (Wayne) Wilding, Trisha (Scott) Boyd, Amy (David) Nowak, John Smith (Megan) ; great grandchildren Michael, Andrew, Rachel, Renee, Jason, Shawn (Kristie), Kyle, Cody, Samantha, Natalie, Alison, and Kaleb; brother Gene Houck; sister Betty (John) Swan; sister-in-law Bonnie Seams; brothers-in-law William (Mary Ellen) Smith and James Smith. Also Many other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, infant granddaughter Lisa; brothers Charles, Albert and William (Bud); sisters Mary and Ruth; brothers-in-law Donald, Bobby, Jack, Glen, and Herbert; sister-in-law Doris.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Suncrest for the special care and love given to Rita during her stay.

Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM, Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Father Clement Suhy will be officiating. Burial at Mt. Loretto Cemetery. Friends may visit Friday, April 19, 2013 from 5 to 8 PM (7 PM Rosary Service) at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors Capstick Chapel. Memorial contributions to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or Suncrest Auxiliary are greatly appreciated.
