Neil Harvey Andersen, age 75 of Detroit, MI, passed away on December 23, 2020, with his loving family at his bedside. He was born on December 30, 1944, in Detroit.
Neil married Diane Andersen, nee. Metz in 1970 and lived in Detroit. He finished his degree at Wayne State and procured a job with the City of Detroit as a supervisor of public housing. He served the people of the city fervently, often arranging rides for the homeless to get to the offices for them to obtain affordable housing. He talked to people and helped them with their needs. Neil was a true civil servant. He loved the city and loved the people. He was a very proud Detroiter and always promoted his hometown wherever he went.
Growing up in Rosedale Park, he and Diane had a wonderful set of local friends. They often enjoyed many evenings of progressive dinners and holiday parties. Neil was the forever comedian, cracking jokes and discussing politics and social issues. He loved a good argument and truly enjoyed political banter.
After retirement, Neil wanted more out of retired life and explored a career with the newly built Greektown Casino. He loved the excitement and conversation the casino brought him. He could talk to anyone about anything. Judgement free and truly engaged and interested. He was fortunate to have many friends there, still receiving calls and texts from his casino buddies on birthdays and holidays.
Neil was the most generous, loving, caring and hilarious grandpa any kid could ask for. He was adamant about further education and started and funded all seven of his grandchildren’s college funds as well as numerous great-grand-nieces and nephews. He was always present at every game, musical, award ceremony, afternoon tea, picnic in the park, sick kid emergency, “Mommy needs a break” call, so on and so on. He loved the precious times the grandkids could be with him on weekend trips up north and Florida vacations.
Dad was always looking for ways to give back. He contributed financially to many charities, but also took the time to be present in the battle. It wouldn’t be odd to see him going door to door, hand delivering socks and other necessities to people in need within the city. He volunteered every election to work the polls. He was passionate about government and being a voice for the people.
Neil was the best father and husband a family could ever have. Everyone that knew him loved him. He will be missed every second and every day of his family's lives.
"We love you Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, Friend and most importantly Husband to our mother."
Neil is survived by his wife of 50 years Diane Marie Andersen; his three children Elizabeth (David) Oliver, Megan (Bryan) Kutz, and Thomas (Sam) Andersen; his seven grandchildren Pike & Ivy Johnson, Mya, Henry, & Thomas Kutz, Lillian & Natalie Andersen.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents Niels & Florence Andersen; sister Carol Nagel.
A memorial service will be held at later date that has yet to be determined. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Capstick Chapel in Lapeer.
