Obituary for Miles Dale Shafer

Miles Dale Shafer, 90, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021 in his home with loving family members around him. Miles was born September 30, 1930 to the late Eugene Victor and Marie Leona Shafer. Loving husband of the late Bernice Ann Shafer; caring father of Mary (John) Bowling, Miles E. Shafer, Nancy (Rick) Heinzmann, Sally (Robert) Galloway, Mark (Lori) Shafer, Julie (Aaron) Swartz and Michael (Jenifer) Shafer; cherished grandfather of Emily (Dennis), Allison, Andrew, Jacob, Carly, Anna, Quyhn, Maranda, Jaxon and Mikella; great grandfather of Cora and Owen; loving brother of 6 sisters (deceased) and 2 brothers (deceased).

Miles enlisted in the army in 1950 and was assigned to Headquarters Company 188th Airborne Infantry Regiment. He received his parachute badge and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1953. He married Bernice, the love of his life, in 1955.

He was a Field Test Engineer for Ford Motor Company Tractor Division and enjoyed testing and operating tractors. He worked hard to care for his family while maintaining a zest for life and having fun.

Miles was a great athlete in high school, winning many awards and medals. He had three full-ride scholarships on football, basketball, and track, and he held the IL state record in low hurtles. He was a great coach in youth sports and volunteered umpiring.

Miles always enjoyed being with his family. Throughout the past 35 years, he especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He proudly celebrated each of them as they grew up developing their talents in sports, music, drama, and everything they had an interest in. He was very happy watching his grandchildren play sports and he made every effort to be at their games supporting them. Playing with and spending time with all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and watching them grow, brought him a great deal of happiness.

Miles loved golfing with his league and took great pleasure in golfing with his sons and grandsons. Ford Mustangs were his favorite car and he treasured his red 1965 Mustang. Playing card games and dominoes were two of his favorite pastimes.

A Veterans service with honors will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI. The date and time to be announced at a later date.
