Obituary for Irene Doris Zahnow
Irene Doris (Stewart) Zahnow, daughter of the late George and Lydia (Lobstein) Stewart, passed away December 21, 2013, in Bradington, Florida. She was born February 7, 1926 in Lapeer, MI. Irene graduated from Lapeer High on June 8, 1943 and Evangelical Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, Detroit in 1947. She was a cadet nurse during WWII. After graduation she worked at the Lapeer State Home and Training School until the new Lapeer County General Hospital was built. She worked there for many years before retiring.
She married the late Richard Charles Zahnow September 27, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She leaves behind two sons Charles Richard (Alice Lorraine Stone) of Lapeer and Mark Alan (fiancé Carol Sosnowski) of White Lake, MI., 3 grandchildren Diana (Richie Oland), Charlene (Ernie Miles), Charles Richard Jr. (Erin Moore), 13 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter and numerous family members of Carol Atkinson Sosnowski, that loved her as a second mother.
She was very active and supported St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lapeer, Red Hats, Ladies Guild, etc. While living with Carol in White Lake she attended the Cedar Crest Lutheran Church. Irene was a charter member and on the board of directors, president, as well as treasurer of the Lapeer Nurses group, American Red Cross Nurse Volunteer, nominated “Nurse of the Year” on June 1, 1967. She was on the State Committee in Lansing, MI, 1988 & 1989, writing health and nutrition programs. She was a member of the VFW and many local organizations. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, reading, dancing, family reunions and watching sports (especially the Tigers).
She loved wintering the past 20 years at Manatee RV Park in Ruskin, FL. Irene traveled the world, 30 + trips in total after Richard’s death on November 3, 1992. Bill Coller was her companion and traveling partner for thirteen years until his death in November 2011. Irene is preceded in death by her parents George and Lydia Stewart, husband Richard Zahnow, brother Earl Stewart, sister Grace (Stewart) Swank. Irene loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, her family and friends. Her prayers would be for all to seek Jesus as your Savior.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 11, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 90 Millville Road, Lapeer, MI with Pastor John Kaiser officiating. Friends may visit from 10:00 - 11:00. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the American Red Cross.
