Obituary for Gordon Mayo Davis

Gordon Mayo Davis "The wooden toy maker", age 87 of Metamora, passed away August 9, 2017. He was born in Romeo, MI on May 12, 1930, to George and Gladys Davis. He graduated from Kettering H.S. Class of 1985. Gordon was a Corporal in the United States Army and served during the Korean War from 1951-1953. He met Hazel Wheeler after returning from the war and nine months later they married.

Gordon worked for Pontiac Motors and retired after 30 years. He and his family lived in Waterford for 33 years until the airport bought them out. Then he and his wife, along with their son's help, built their new home in Metamora, MI. He learned carpentry on his own and built the inside of several homes, two complete homes, furniture, and designed many wooden toys. He and his wife enjoyed selling the toys at craft shows for 33 years. The kids knew him as Santa's helper.

While living in Waterford, they were active members of the Waterford Community Church. they helped the Boys Brigade and the youth on Sunday evenings. When they moved to Metamora they became members of Hunter's Creek Community Church. Gordon served as a deacon, an elder, head usher, and he and his wife lead the senior group.

Gordon is survived by his wife Hazel; their four boys: Paul (Meladee), service as missionaries in Gabon, Africa, Leslie (Michele) from Piedmont, SC, Wesley (Lorraine) from Dryden, MI, and Donald of Waterford, MI; seven grandchildren: Mark, Sarah, Joshua, Amy, Rebecca, Philip, Bethany; 9 great grandchildren: Lacey, Christopher, Malachi, Tara, Brendan, Holly, Brianna, Kriesten, and Isaac. He is also survived by six brothers: Floyd, Carl, Richard, Jim, Burdette, and Norman; Aunt Marie; several sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his wife, family, and all those that knew him.

He was preceded in death by both parents; brother Clayton; granddaughter Vanessa.

The Davis family will be receiving friends on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Capstick Chapel in Lapeer. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 12th at 3:00 p.m. at Hunter's Creek Community Church with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #16 honor guard. Burt Davis will be officiating. Burial at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations to Hunter's Creek Community Church are greatly appreciated.
