Obituary for Gertrude Atwood

Gertrude (Thomas) Atwood, age 84, of Lapeer, went home to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully and in the comfort of her home on May 8, 2015.

She was born in Detroit on November 18, 1930 and married the love of her life, husband Roy Glen Atwood, on January 13, 1950. They had four children: Roy Atwood Jr. and wife Sue, Keith Atwood and wife Judy, Craig Atwood and wife Debbie, Laurie Atwood and lifetime partner Bill Stewart.

Gertrude loved her family more than anything and enjoyed so many things in her life. She spent hours a day reading her Bible and praying for others. She read the Bible through over 21 times. She loved the sunshine, flowers, birds and going to church two times every week. She loved all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was happy and content with the simple life. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, family and friends in their motorhome. She loved to cook and made the best buttermilk pancakes in the world! She was Joyful, Thankful, Forgiving, Content and Loving! Some of her last words were “Everyone should be Happy, Healthy and Holy.” She was a faithful member of New Beginnings Family Church where all knew her as “Grandma.” She will be missed by all!

In addition to her children, Gertrude is survived by her brother Martin Thomas, her grandchildren Chris Atwood, Crystal (Atwood) Minard, Joshua Atwood, Katie (Atwood) Elzerman, Paul and Gabriel Atwood, Amber Whitefield, Billie Nicole Stewart, Tony and Tina Bezinque; her great-grandchildren Caylin, Autumn and Giovana Fusero, Nick Minard, Hailey, Hope and Hazel Atwood, Sierra and Jacob Bezinque, Zarah and Azelle Atwood, Hailey and Chase Whitefield. Also, many nieces and nephews whom she loved so very much.

Preceding her in death was her husband Roy, her parents Theodore and Wilma Thomas, her brothers John Thomas and Doug Thomas, and her grandson Josiah David Atwood.

A graveside service at Mt. Hope Cemetery will be held on Monday, May 11th at 11:00 a.m. Additionally, a beautiful memorial service is being planned and will be held at New Beginnings Family Church on June 13th at 11:00 a.m.
