Obituary for Florence Eleanor Smith

Florence Eleanor Smith, age 83 of Marlette, passed away May 23, 2020. She was born in Mayville, MI on December 16, 1936. Florence was born on December 16, 1936, to Lawerence and Edwina Richards. She was raised in Fostoria, MI by her grandparents, George and Hattie Behringer. From age one and a half she lived with them on a 40 acre farm. Throughout her childhood she was raised with a Christian upbringing and was active in the church choir and the 4H club. During the summer months, she would visit her father, mother and siblings. She had had many friends and was loved by many. At 16 years old she married Walter Turner. They lived in North Branch and had four children together.

Florence was a homemaker and a factory worker. In 1971 she married Alfred Warner and reside in Marlette, MI. At that time she was a homemaker, a school bus driver, and a foster parents for Teen Ranch Boys. She eventually graduated to driving Greyhound busses. She drove for Greyhound for 9.5 years, taking many passengers to many places across the country.

Florence’s hobbies included sewing, wood carving, keyboard, piano, canning, gardening, and playing the saxophone. In her later years, she became a snow bird and she enjoyed traveling back and forth from Michigan and Arizona in her truck with trailer in tow.

Florence was a good mother, foster parent, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She was a very intelligent and gifted woman who could teach herself many skills that others would envy.

Florence is survived by her children, Kim (Mary) Turner, Keith (Darlene) Turner, Ken Turner, and Renea (Brad) Baxter; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters Dorothy Foster, Ella Ronk, and Donna Perry.

Florence was preceded in death by her husbands Alfred Warner and Ross Smith; brothers George Richards, Ernest Richards, and Daniel Richards; sister Effie Randal; parents Lawrence and Edwina Richards.

A private family only visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 27th from 1-4 p.m. at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Capstick Chapel in Lapeer. A private family only funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 28th at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Drew Jolly will officiate. Florence will be laid to rest at Marlette Cemetery. Memorial donations to the family are appreciated.
