Obituary for Elva Augusta (Avis) Baird

Elva Avis Baird age 87 of Lapeer passed away on March 24, 2011. She was born Dec. 3, 1923 in North Branch. Elva was the daughter of Glen and Martha Avis. She was a lifelong resident of Lapeer and was recently preceded in death by her husband of over 65 years Robert Baird. Elva is survived by her son Fred Baird of Austin, TX; grandsons Robert (Jeanne) Baird of Austin, Brittin Baird of Baton Rouge, sisters Alice Doe of Traverse City, MI, Ruth Ann (Pete) Kavanagh of Greenwood, sister Eva Avis of Lapeer and a large number of nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by sisters-in-law, Ora O'Conner, Margaret Kuhn; brother Ronald Avis; brother-in-law Nelson Doe. Elva was a member of a large number of clubs and groups in the Lapeer area. She was married in Grace Episcopal Church and remained a member her whole life. She attended a one room school at Five Lakes and later graduated from Lapeer High School before going on to college. Both Elva and her husband Bob were avid hunters and pursued their hobby all over North America. The whole family was very fond of competing in high power rifle events. She the best shot in the family and one year was the woman's high power rifle champion for Michigan and Ohio. Both Elva and Bob were life masters in the NRA. They were also very fond of travel, having visited almost all of the United States and Canada and made several trips to Europe. Elva and her husband were partners in Baird's Funeral Home with her in-laws for over 15 years. She also worked for Consumer's Power for a number of years. A Memorial Service will take place at Grace Episcopal Church (735 West Nepessing Street, Lapeer) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 4:00 pm. A small family gathering will be held at a later date to inter her and her husbands cremated remains. Memorial donations to Grace Episcopal Church are greatly appreciated.
