Obituary for Barbara Ann Sommerfield

Barbara Ann Sommerfield (née Varitek) died peacefully in hospice care at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan on June 4, 2018 at the age of 78.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Richard “Dick” Sommerfield; children, Carolyn (Kerry) Bush; Richard (Jeanne) and Thomas; her grandchildren, Monica (Travis), Derek, Stephen (Katherine), Darien and Davis; great-grandchildren, Lucille and Penelope; her siblings, Joanne Brem, Stephen (Pauline) and Daniel (Pamela). She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Varitek, and her brothers, John (Martha) and David (Kim).

Barbara was born on October 2, 1939 in Weirton, WV to John Varitek, Sr. and Anna Slusarek. She married Richard Sommerfield, her high school sweetheart, on December 27, 1957. They moved to Michigan in 1966. Barbara began working for Beaumont Hospital as a medical transcriptionist. She was a dedicated employee for 43 years, and made many friends there before finally retiring as an administrative secretary at the age of 75. The couple welcomed three children into their home. Her children remember her as a kind and generous mother who sacrificed to send them to private schools.

Barbara was a liver transplant recipient and was featured on The Learning Channel show – “Reunions” with Dona, who had the same illness as Barbara and received a new liver on the same day.

Barbara enjoyed cooking for the family and established many traditions. Her grandchildren fondly recall the Christmas Cookie Baking tradition and plan to continue this. The Slovak Christmas dinner featured hundreds of hand-made pierogis. The Valentine’s Day Brunch was started after her liver transplant and celebrated each year thereafter.

She was a talented and creative woman, who tried her hand at calligraphy, ceramics, and also creating her own greeting cards. She enjoyed genealogy and was able to travel to Nova Lubovna, Slovakia, in 2010 to visit her ancestral village. She enjoyed music concerts and boy, could she polka dance!

The family would like to thank the organ donor team at University of Michigan, the caring staff at Royal Oak Beaumont and the wonderful people at The Pines of Lapeer for the excellent care of Barbara.

A memorial gathering for Barbara will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Capstick Chapel, 542 Liberty Park, Lapeer MI, on July 13, 2018 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. A memorial Mass is scheduled for July 14, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 814 W.
